One-der The Sea: The Weekend We Celebrated One
Sometimes motherhood moves faster than our ability to write it all down.
I had every intention of sharing this sooner, but somewhere between the laundry piles, snack requests, bedtime routines, and simply soaking in the season we were in, this memory stayed tucked away in my heart instead of finding its way here.
But some moments are too special to leave unwritten.
The last weekend of February 2025, we celebrated Ariella's very first birthday.
Our little mermaid turned one.
The room was filled with seashells, pastel balloons, smiling faces, and all the people who loved her most. The theme was "One-der The Sea," and it couldn't have been more perfect for the little girl who had completely changed our world over the previous twelve months.
I remember looking around the room and thinking, How are we already here? How had we gone from late-night feedings and newborn snuggles to cheering on a one-year-old with frosting-covered fingers?
There was cake on her cheeks and excitement in her eyes as she explored every bite. Family laughed, cameras clicked, and wrapping paper covered the floor. It wasn't a picture-perfect kind of day—and maybe that's exactly what made it perfect.
It was real.
It was grandparents sneaking extra smiles and parents trying to soak in every second. It was friends and family celebrating the little girl who had already brought so much joy into our lives.
The decorations eventually came down. The gifts found their places. Life returned to its normal rhythm.
But this is what I've learned about motherhood: the moments we fight hardest to hold onto aren't always the biggest ones.
They're the look on your baby's face when everyone sings "Happy Birthday."
The tiny hand reaching for another bite of cake.
The overwhelming gratitude that settles in your heart as you realize just how loved your child truly is.
Ariella, I don't know what you'll remember from that weekend.
You probably won't remember the mermaids or the balloons.
You won't remember the cake or the presents.
But I hope you'll always know this:
You were celebrated.
You were cherished.
You were surrounded by people who adored you before you could ever understand just how deeply you were loved.
Happy first birthday, sweet girl.
Thank you for making me your mama.
Our One-der The Sea celebration lasted only a weekend, but the memories we made will stay with me forever.
